🪶 Colors, Minds, and Game of Thrones

Disclaimer: This post is meant for all. However, it may be a difficult read for those with colorblindness.

This is a draft from the winter when I watched a few GoT episodes over the holiday with family. I have seen it in its entirety once before. The thing happened; where you re-watch something and notice new details.

Re-watching, I noticed Khaleesi's wardrobe turn entirely black towards the end of the show. This led me to look into the colors of certain House's, and what they symbolize.

Colors

They’re all around us. The blues of the sky and ocean. The greens of the fresh spring grass and leaves. These colors have been with us for as long as we’ve been. But what affect do they have on us and why?

Green

The color green is often associated with nature, growth, and renewal. It is a calming color that has a tendency to evoke feelings of relaxation and tranquility. It is often used in hospitals and other healthcare settings for its relevance to health and healing.

The negative connotations are envy, and greed. In other the words, the maximization of its positive connotations. This fits almost perfectly with House Tyrell in GoT, whose sigil features a golden rose in a green field.

Margaery Tyrell becomes known for her cunningness and manipulation, which can parallel growth and envy. The family is from the Reach, a region known for fertile lands. Throughout the show you see Margaery's ability to adapt and thrive in different situations, making green a very suitable color to represent the House.

Blue

A color often associated with calmness, trust, and stability. Popular in branding and advertising because it can evoke feelings of reliability and professionalism. In terms of symbolism it represents loyalty, wisdom, intellect, and in some cultures, spirituality, and the divine. Very fitting for its role in GoT.

House Stark, whose sigil features a direwolf on blue land is a great embodiment of the color. Bran Stark has his connections to the divine through his abilities to move from body to body. The Stark family becomes known for their honor, loyalty, and wisdom throughout the show.

Red

Yeah, that house. The color red has both positive and negative connotations. The positive: passion, energy, strength, courage, and power. The negative: anger, danger, violence, and bloodshed.

House Lannister's sigil features a golden lion on a red field. Very fitting for the House that is not afraid to turn to the sword, or protect their interests with by any means. The violence and bloodshed tend to follow them throughout their quest for power in the show.

Another character is the Red Woman. A character with a fiery personality, and strong dedication to the Lord of Light. A god associated with fire and blood sacrifice.

Black

A neutral color that can be paired with other colors to create a variety of moods and emotions. On its own, it can be associated with darkness, mystery, and sophistication. Often worn at funerals and weddings for its elegance.

In GoT it acts as the primary color of the Night's Watch. The members of the watch wear black cloaks to signify their allegiance to the defense of the realm against threats beyond the Wall. Another prominent showing of the color is Khaleesi in the last few episodes. It relates with her power, authority, and acts of rebellion as they all come together in the last season. She started the show in light colors, and ended in all black.

White

Another neutral color. It can evoke feelings of peace and tranquility. Typically associated with purity, innocence, goodness, spirituality, and perfection. However, white can also have negative connotations such as emptiness and sterility.

In GoT, Khaleesi comes to mind with white clothing, up until the last few episodes. We also see it directly associated via name with the White Walkers. A group that is made out to be otherworldly in early seasons by being from a frozen North.

That's it

Make sure your life has plenty of color.
